In December 2001, Peking University-Qianxi
Community Legal Clinic
was formally established, which consists of 5
sections covering publicity and counseling,
case-dealing, law building, information and
organization and communication. It aims at
facilitating application of legal knowledge by
Peking University students into legal practice in
Qianxi county and providing free legal service to
Qianxi women at the same time. It is an effort for
exploring feasible method of law popularization and
building of community legal service and rule of law
simultaneously.
The students visit Qianxi once a month and stay for
a week and work together with the Center staffs.
The clinic members often got down to household
investigations as soon as they arrived at a village
to learn about the needs of the masses and screen
legal issues. Followed are straightaway training
classes on the Women’s Rights Law, the Marriage Law,
the Elderly Rights Protection Law and the Land
Contract Law with site counseling, mitigation
service and case reception. The live and eat in
villagers’ home and labor and study together with
the villagers which creates a strong atmosphere for
protecting women’s rights.
In the past four years, 33 classes/times for law
studying were conducted, 6,000 copies of materials
distributed and 1,000 person/time household services
provided. 15,000 people benefited from these
activities and services and the masses are more
aware of legal protection of rights.
